on the internets, we're always talking about rape! And comics.

Interneeeeeets! I missed you! My computer DIED finally. I mean, slow death over the past 3 months, but it finally joined the Choir Invisible. So I type to you on my brand new Retina display! OHMYGODIT'SSHINY. So shiny.

(Oh, Mac. What's a week of migration troubles and bullshit between friends, bullshit which is not yet over but I just can't deal with it anymore tonight, I ask you? Or at least between company that beat me up and took all my cash, and sucker.)

I just saw Seanan McGuire's post about how she will Not Be Writing Any Of The Rape, Thank You, Horrible Entitled Fan. Which reminded me of the Diana Gabaldon book I read over my trip. 1940s woman goes accidentally time traveling back to Olden Times, and if there's one thing we know about Olden Times, it's that it was always rape o'clock back then! However, and I did not quite get how funny this was until the end, our protagonist Claire gets a rape threat here and a rape threat there and here a grope, there a beating, everywhere a rape threat, but in the end, the only named character in the book who actually gets raped is her boyfriend. Heh.

Which totally works for me! I mean, if rape is necessary for gritty realism, let us have realistic gritty backstory for everybody! Let's have Batman dedicated to fighting crime because his parents were killed and then he got buggered in an alley! Let's have Captain America overcome his trauma from being gang banged by Nazis! I mean, those male superheroes - going around by themselves all the time, wearing all that skintight spandex. What did they expect?

That works surprisingly well in my mind as a Captain America backstory. I'm liking that a lot more than the real one.

There are no words.

Let's have Captain America overcome his trauma from being gang banged by Nazis!

AO3's tag filtering is still down, or I'd link you to the "Steve Rogers" + "Rape/Noncon" page. It's definitely been done.

Well of course it has! I mean, my first reaction to hearing the beginning of Ms. McGuire's story was "Dude, fanfiction is there for you. Go sign up for Yuletide!" Like, at this point I don't even judge him too hard for what he wants to read. He is hardly alone!

I judge the shit out of him for feeling entitled to demand that the author cater to his wank fantasies, though. Hell, for feeling entitled to declare that the author is a bad author if she does not cater to his wank fantasies. And I judge the society that empowers these fantasies at the expense of women but not men. I judge the society that sets it up so that men get paid in millions of dollars for portraying their fantasies and women get paid in "kudos".

But I don't want to shut anybody down. I only call for equality! I call for all the noncon fans at the AOOOOO to write in to Marvel demanding that Whedon include scenes of Skrulls sexually threatening each and every one of the male Avengers in the next movie, individually and together, with long, lingering shots of their tear-filled eyes and vulnerable backsides!

Fortunately (?), the female characters get their share of rape later in the series. :-/

Ugh, not surprised but that gets shoved a few steps down the priority list then.

Ok, look, why did you say that, now I have to write that Captain America fic. What is wrong with you.

I blame society! No, I mean I actually do.

about that computer transfer

Sorry to hear that you're having Mac troubles - customer support is *supposed* to be good, isn't that why we pay the big bucks? My very recent computer change was glitchy but, eventually, quick. When Migration Assistant didn't work I went immediately to the Genius Bar. It took some fast work and odd workarounds on the part of my assigned genius but - 90 bloody minutes later! - it was done. That was last night so subtle problems might yet appear. And still trying to get used to "natural" scrolling.

Re: about that computer transfer

I should absolutely have done that, blah! I did not because of 1) the difficulty of organizing baby care, but even more so 2) it kept looking like I had solved the problem, and it would update overnight, and I'd get up in the morning and NO.

It looks like it may have finally worked, though. (I finally transferred over documents and apps separately.) "Natural" scrolling is some natural bullshit! I do not like it!
